Hmmm... I wouldn't say it's hard on the eyes (too much). I like the basic layout. Using a semi-transparent background for the text areas is a neat touch. I can see how some folks might have a problem with that because it doesn't provide great contrast for the text. I could see going to an solid background for text might be helpful.
The background image is de rigeur, of course. My only beef there is that it's tiled rather full-screen (just a thing I have...). Of course, full-screen would obscure the TARDIS, so that's a problem.
I guess the problem for my old eyes is the variable background colour. Cool to be sure, but I like contrast. I say keep it.
